Hi Kfbers! Today on know your own health, we are looking at itching. For the newbies, KFB know your own health is a weekly segment where we talk about issues that affect our bodies.

Itching is a sensation that leads to scratching. Scratching may cause redness and deep cuts on the skin. In fact, scratching may cause further itching which may result into dark spots and scar formation on the skin.


Causes of Itching
1.       Parasitic infections e.g scabies (craw craw), lice, ring worm
2.       Worm infection .g Hookworm, filarial worm etc.
3.       Insect bite or sting
4.       Sexually transmitted disease e.g. syphilis, gonorrhea etc.
5.       Allergic conditions (Reaction) to dust, food, flowers, cosmetics, creams, wool dresses etc.
6.       Drug hypersensitivity or reaction e.g. chloroquine, septrin, streptomycin, etc.
7.       Jaundice especially in liver diseases
8.       Dehydration in elderly
9.       Diabetes, kidney and liver diseases, thyroid disorders
10.   Blood disorders e.g. leukemia
11.   Pregnancy, especially in late pregnancy
12.   Heat rashes
Note that stress anxiety may aggravate itching, so keep calm and do some breaking exercise.

Clinical Features
1.       Scratching
2.       Readiness of the skin
3.       Urticarial rashes (hives)
4.       Erosion of the skin surface
5.       Superficial wound
6.       Black spot

Management
If itching persistsor become disturbing and embarrassing, then there is need to investigate the cause by consulting your doctor for necessary investigation and definite diagnosis.

Home Remedy
1.       Try to resists scratching
2.       Apply a soothing preparation such as Calamine lotion
3.       Apply a cold compress using clean hand towel
4.       Try Hydrocortisone cream for localized area of red and itching skin.
5.       Take anti-itching pills like piriton tablet
6.       Wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid wearing wool next to your skin.
