Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are in war of words over who sponsored last Tuesday’s protest by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Port Harcourt, the state capital, where they demanded the release of the detained director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
While Wike is alleging that those who staged the pro-Biafra protest, which brought Port Harcourt to a halt, were motivated by opposition politicians in the state with the failed aim of creating unnecessary political tension, the APC is accusing the governor of being behind the protest.
The governor, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by his special assistant on Media, Simeon Nwakaudu said, “The Rivers State government in the strongest terms dissociates itself from the protests in parts of Port Harcourt by some persons motivated by opposition politicians in the state with the failed aim of creating unnecessary political tension.
“Rivers State is one of the federating units of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is not part of any separatist movement and will never be. The government and people of Rivers State remain committed to a united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria. It is unfortunate that unpopular opposition elements are willing to go to any length to score cheap political points.”
But, in a swift reaction, the APC, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by its publicity secretary, Chris Finebone, alleged that the groups that participated in the protest were mainly from the South-East geo-political zone of the country and were coordinated by the special assistant to the governor on Media, Simeon Nwakaudu.
Finebone said, “Credible information available to the Rivers State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) confirm that the sporadic protests that broke out in Port Harcourt Tuesday by a number of non-indigenous groups under the platform of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) was sponsored by Governor Nyesom Wike.
