Panic briefly erupted in D.C. as Union Station, one of the country's busiest transportation hubs, was put on lockdown after a man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend was shot by a security guard. 
The sound of gunshots had commuters and people enjoying their lunch diving under tables and hiding in stores restaurant kitchens on the 14th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. 
Police said shots were fired by a contract security guard, injuring a man who allegedly shot his girlfriend during an argument.

Both the man and woman were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Union Station, which is just steps away from Capitol Hill, was briefly evacuated and lawmakers were warned to stay away from the area.

People were seen fleeing the station just before 1pm.
The D.C. Police Department soon after tweeted that there was no active shooter on the scene. 
The scene was quickly controlled but it sent the busy station into a moment of panic and chaos. 
Logan W. Burroughs was eating at the station's Chipotle restaurant when he suddenly saw people running.

'I thought there was a fight or a flash mob or something,' he told the Daily Mail Online. 'And I heard people screaming upstairs and everyone's like "What do we do?'"
'That's when the shot hit and someone yelled they're shooting...everyone started freaking out.' 
Burroughs ran into Chipotle's kitchen with others, where they briefly stayed until they were told the building was being evacuated. 
They then left the station through emergency exits but even after everyone made it outside, many were clearly still rattled.
'People were crying outside,' Burroughs said. 'I saw grown men crying on the phone calling wives and loved ones.'   
Police activity at the station concluded around by 1:30pm and they quickly began letting people back inside, authorities reported.
